Rethinking Assessment for Generative AI: Orals and discussions

This post is part of a series on rethinking assessment in light of generative AI. The posts draw on research and resources from K-12 and tertiary to suggest ways that educators can design engaging, compelling assessments which shift the narrative away from GAI and "cheating". In a previous post, I talked about the risks associated with trying to "catch" students, such as the ethical issues with detection software, the mistrust created by heavy-handed academic integrity policies, and the […]

Rethinking Assessment for Generative AI: Beyond the Essay

This post is part of a series on rethinking assessment in light of generative AI. The posts draw on research and resources from K-12 and tertiary to suggest ways that educators can design engaging, compelling assessments which shift the narrative away from GAI and "cheating". Click here for the previous post on oral assessments. There are plenty of good reasons to use the essay as a formal piece of assessment. Essays offer an opportunity for students to demonstrate their knowledge in a […]

@jessta
I love your Mum too. She is clever & smart & direct & plain speaking. That takes guts, especially against the weight of the education institutions system & infrastructure. πŸ₯°

I remember not doing the NAPLAN tests as a kid because my mum wrote a letter to the school saying she didn't want me participating in the farce of testing student to see how well the education system is working and then not actually using that data to increase funding for education anyway.

I love my mum.

The suggested "teach it as theory" approach doubtless works perfectly for cats. But is failing dreadfully when used to teach literacy to Australian school children.

"Today we are learning the writing process."

Edit: Anyone can see that, "Today we are learning to forge sick notes" will work better for children.

A third of school students still failing in literacy and numeracy

Follow the latest headlines from ABC News, Australia's most trusted media source, with live events, audio and on-demand video from the national broadcaster.

This is the inconvenient part. When we look at conditions associated with better results in education, they are tied partly to schools’ resourcing (funny how chronic underfunding erodes capacity) & partly to context outside the education budget.

We see the consequences of decades of policies designed to enrich the few & screw the poor.

More resourcing, professional development for teachers could help improve NAPLAN results

After 17 years of NAPLAN testing, Australia is yet to see a big turnaround in results β€” so what can be done to improve them?

@augieray

Thank you, as ever.

The latest #NAPLAN (Australian National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) results have just come out here. They're not good.

You can NOT tell me that #COVID19 isn't a huge part of this.

NAPLAN results again show one-third of students aren't meeting literacy and numeracy expectations amid calls for urgent change

The annual test of literacy and numeracy for students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 shows some isolated improvements but largely stable results.

ABC News

The fact that the majority of these kids have had #COVID19 at least once will absolutely have something to do with it.

They've been off school due to illness, they have #COVIDbrain, their teachers have been off with #COVID19. All of this and more.

Why are we ignoring this?

Why?

This is a bit of a vanity share as I scored 10/10!

Mind you, my recall of English grammar theory nearly stumped me: when, in everyday life, are you required to point to the part of a sentence that is adverbial?
