Manga: My Idol Sits the Next Desk Over! vol 1-5 by Tetsu Tsutsui and Koyubi Sugawara
This is not a deep story with brilliant sub-text. I have been following it because of my interest in idols. The story revolves around a 16-year-old idol, Chiro-chan. Chrio-chan is a new student at a high school and two super fans (wota) recognize her. 1. Sakiko Manaka is the good idol who wants only what is best for Chiro-chan. 2, The other is a yandere, the jealous self-centered wota.
Told from the POV of Manaka-san it is about the relationship of the two girls with their idol, contrasting how they act and view the object of their devotion.
As a wota myself, I am fascinated by this view of wota culture. It rings pretty true both the good and bad of idolhood and wotas. The story has a growth arch which I like. But the characters are one-dimensional. Like I said, this is not a deep manga.
I follow mainly yuri I need to answer the question “How yuri is it?” By the liberal definition of yuri, - “A story about the relationship between women” - it qualifies. But don’t read it expecting romance, hand-holding, or kissing. It isn’t that kind of yuri.
There are minor male side characters but no het romance in sight. And I don’t think one will develop.
If you would like to learn more about wota culture and how we relate to our oshi it would be an interesting read. If you are an idol fan, you might enjoy seeing yourself reflected in the characters. A fan of girl’s club-type yuri might enjoy it as a light read. Just don’t expect depth, romance, or fan service.
