🧵2/ Alma Deutscher is a contemporary young musical genius. She reports having almost constant tunes & melodies in her head, and she excels at classical improvisation. Give her four notes and a few minutes, and she’ll improvise a five minute classical masterpiece out of thin air. There are plenty of vids of her doing that on YT, and it’s amazing to watch her play. Her composing goal, in her own words, is to create ‘beautiful’ music. She’s a massive success I must say - and a shining light in the #ClassicalMusic world. If you don’t already know about her, allow me… this thread will thoroughly introduce her. She started playing piano at 2, violin at 4. She wrote her first concerto at 6 and her 1st opera at 10. Her opera, Cinderella, has been performed in Vienna and in California. I’ve been following her since she was a child prodigy. I just watched a very interesting bio of #HazelScott on #PBS #AmericanMasters.
Scott was a #Black woman who was a #MusicalProdigy who was enrolled at #Julliard at a very young age, who mastered the classics but who made a living mainly playing jazz & #popular music w/crossovers to classical music.
Hazel was married (for a time) to #AdamClaytonPowell, had the 1st TV show in the 50's staring a #Black performer before #NatKingCole got one, made a few movies on her own terms before being #BlackListed from the #movies & from #TV because she stood up for the herself & the rights of others & who lived for a time in #Paris, like a lot of Black creative people did to escape the discrimination they felt in the #US.

The youngest student ever accepted to the prestigious Vienna School of Conducting, Deutscher is a music genius of substantial proportions. Easy to say. Well, point taken… so to support my assertion, have a listen to her improvise a classical piece based on four notes chosen by her audience out of a hat.
