Here is how your music subscription currently works. You pay. Your money goes into a pool with everyone else's money. The platform takes 30%. The remaining pool is divided among all rights holders in proportion to their share of total global streams.

If you listen exclusively to independent Australian musicians, your subscription is still subsidising the artists who dominate the global stream count. You have no meaningful say in who your money reaches.

The user-centric model works differently: your subscription goes to the artists you actually listen to. The Pack's 1:1 model is this written into cooperative governance - not a policy subject to revision when major rights holders push back, or when shareholders decide they deserve a bigger slice of the pie.

We don't think this is a difficult decision. It's just a different decision about whose interests the platform was designed to serve. We think it should be musicians, not billionaire tech-bros.

New blog on the pro-rata system, the user-centric alternative, and what $7 a month means when you get to direct it.

I was pretty flatout with WikiCon Australia 2026 Canberra but here's what happened this week:

@elliottbledsoe This is a fascinating look at how royalty collection is expanding into the gaming space. As these digital ecosystems grow, the need for verified, day-one ownership data becomes even more critical for creators. Thanks for the breakdown! 🎹 #MusicRoyalties #MusicTech
@HPMusic Royalty investing is a game changer for the industry. But for the assets to be investable, the underlying data has to be bulletproof. Professional split sheets are the first step in turning a song into a reliable financial asset. 🎹 #MusicRoyalties #MusicBusiness

Independent artists are now receiving nearly half of all Spotify royalty payouts. The shift is real, but you only see that money if your credits are actually locked in. Don't leave your publishing to chance.

The UK music collecting society is pursuing Steam, PlayStation has been toying with dynamic pricing and Crikey breakdown Palantir Technologies' Australian Defence contract.

And: Katy Perry lost a trade mark battle with an Australian fashion designer, La Trobe University appointed an AI Pro Vice-Chancellor and the Oversight Board wants Meta to do more to identify AI content.
