After running for 100 years, historic Mud Lake School closes
With a relocation process in motion, the remote community of Mud Lake, Labrador is dwindling in size. This year, the last three students at Mud Lake School are moving away— bringing a historic legacy to a close.

A Hairy Woodpecker. They've got pretty much the same look and colour scheme as their cousins the Downies (including the red head patch for males), but are quite a bit bigger. Also their beaks are proportionately bigger. If you see one of these guys and the beak is almost as long as the head, you got a Hairy -- Ottawa, Mud Lake, January 1

A pretty pretty Downy Woodpecker. Male, as you can see from the red patch on the back of his head -- Ottawa, Mud Lake, January 1

Dark-eyed Juncos range across North America and show tremendous variations in their outfits. This is the "slate-colored" subspecies, common east of the Rockies; totally unlike the "Oregon" subspecies in my neck of the woods, with its warm brown body and black head+chest.

They're built the same way, with the same behaviours (mostly ground foraging, and staying under cover), and the same short clicky calls -- Ottawa, Mud Lake, January 1

Hey they got Cedar Waxwings in Ottawa! How long has that been going on?

(Turns out Ottawa is at the limit of their year-round range in these parts. Neat!) -- Ottawa, Mud Lake, January 1

A Yellow-Rumped Warbler: a regular resident seen in a wonderful protected park in our city, called Mud Lake, near our property. They are quite fast thought and hard to see them still. #birdwatching #birds #nature #birdphotography #ottawa #wildlife #mudlake
@marcotheluck That's another beautiful picture. I used to live close to Mud Lake. It's a lovely place for spotting all sorts of birds that you don't necessarily see elsewhere in Ottawa. I haven't been to Mud Lake since the derecho. I hear that the damage was considerable.
