The Protection of Mount Moco in Angola
Angola has recently declared Mount Moco, its highest mountain, as part of a new conservation area to safeguard its threatened Afromontane forests. The new area, known as Serra do Moco, is located in the municipality of Londuimbali, in the Huambo province, and comprises a complex of plateaus, slopes, and valleys. According to a government notice published on April 9, this region will now be subject to a “special environmental protection regime, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable use.”
The declaration protects approximately 22,000 hectares of land, as commented by ornithologist Michael Mills in an interview with Mongabay. “It includes all areas where there could be forest,” he added. Mills has been working since 2011 with the residents of the Kanjonde village, located at the foot of Mount Moco, to restore forests destroyed by deforestation and fires.

MOUNT MOCO, Angola — On the slopes of Angola’s highest mountain stands the gray jagged stump of a once mighty tree. It’s the remnant of a Guinea plum (Parinari excelsa), a species native to Mount Moco’s evergreen forests. When South African ornithologist Michael Mills first started to survey the mountain’s forests in 2005, it was […]
