City of Melbourne's e-scooter ban under pressure from councils in city's inner-north
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-08-23/inner-melbourne-councils-e-scooter-hire/104260120

Sad to see Greens and ALP mayors of Darebin, Merri-bek, and Moonee Valley so out of touch with reality.

Now is not the time to cosy-up to e-scooter hire companies and greenwash their bad business practices. Local councils should stop giving money to Uber and stop trying to greenwash-away substandard cycling infrastructure in local councils.

Darebin Mayor Susanne Newton has ignored years of complaints from residents and medical care workers, and shows what a gullible fool she is with this glib statement:
"I've spoken to the providers and I'm pretty comfortable with the technology that they're using to reduce speeds, make sure people park in particular places."

On the other hand, Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece took a realistic approach. He said the City of Melbourne's decision to ban the hire of e-scooters was in response to frustrated traders, residents and emergency department doctors and said he was "fed up with bad behaviour putting our community at risk".

Three inner-Melbourne councils are joining forces to make e-scooter hire available in Melbourne

The City of Melbourne is putting an end to e-scooter hire in the CBD, but the mayors of Darebin, Moonee Valley and Merri-bek are teaming up to create an inner-north zone for share hire vehicles.

Moonee Valley has some weird popup bike infrastructure. Queens Ave, Ascot Vale has a counter flow protected bike lane on the wrong side of the road. It would be quite nice if they widened it slightly to make it a two way bike lane.

It wouldn't even require removing any parking. Just narrow the car lane a bit.

Last week I spoke with Harry from Senator Jane Hume's office. I was honest and upfront in saying that we have had a gutful of #Labor MPs either refusing to meet with us, or having met with us, taken no actions to bring our concerns to #CatherineKingMP - and so that is why I am now approaching shadow ministers and the opposition.
Harry was not aware of our campaign or what our concerns regarding the 3rd runway are. I gave him a bit of a background of the project, presented him with our main concerns and advised him of what our keys asks are. For those of you who are new to our campaign, our key asks are as follows:

1. Insist on an independent impact assessment focusing on 4 key parameters; #Environment, #Climate, #Health & Economic impacts.

2. Ensure adequate independent #community consultation, is conducted in all impacted municipalities (as identified by Melbourne Airport); #Darebin, #HobsonsBay, #Hume, #Macedon Ranges, #Maribyrnong, #Melton, #MooneeValley, #MerriBek, #Whittlesea and #Brimbank.

3. Ensure the project proposal application is declined, should the #independent assessments determine that the negative impacts outweigh any potential or perceived benefits of the project.

Harry listened to the concerns I raised attentively, seemed to agree that our requests were reasonable and informed me that he would take all of this to Senator Hume and to all members of her office. He was open to ongoing conversation and advised that we were welcome to reach out at any time, should be have further questions or concerns regarding the runway proposal.
I requested that if it was within his power, to reach out to any mainstream media outlets and call on them to cover this story, whilst we wait for Senator Hume to (hopefully) raise the issue with Catherine King and the Federal government.
By the meetings end, I felt heard and optimistic. I have since followed up with an email to Harry containing further information and a link to our Facebook group. I hope that Senator Hume will be more proactive than our Labor MPs, in representing our community concerns and help us to ensure there is #no3rdtullarunway!

Victorian Environment Minister Steve Dimopoulos has announced $900k for more trees for Melbourne's west.

We think this is a great initiative. More canopy shade to combat #UrbanHeat as temperatures rise with climate change (Silly humans not reigning in #Fossilfuels fast enough so now you have to adapt). And more places for us to leave scent messages (peemails).

Western Melbourne has the lowest tree canopy cover in metropolitan Melbourne, with just 5.5% of urban tree cover in Melbourne as of 2018.

Now if only State Planning Department would update the data on vegetation and urban heat which is now 5 years old.

On January 26, I had the opportunity to speak with Mayor of Moonee Valley Council Pierce Tyson, Cr. Rose Iser and Moonee Valley City Council CEO Helen Sui, about Indigenous healing and how we can be more sensitive to our First Nations people on January 26.
We also discussed a local project I have been wanting and proposing for several years and Mayor Tyson was gracious enough to invite me to send him my proposal, in the hope that he may be able to advocate for it on my behalf (watch this space). Both Cr. Iser and Ms. Sui were encouraged by my enthusiasm to create local change for indigenous peoples, and were incredibly supportive and enthusiastic.
I also had an opportunity to speak with Niddrie Greens candidate Declan McGinness, where we discussed how collaboration not politics, will see the most positive changes for our communities come to fruition.
I thank all of these wonderful people for their warm hospitality and genuine care in what I had to say.

Last week I had an opportunity to speak with Ben Carroll (Minister for Public Transport) and continue our conversation about fares for users of the new Keilor East (Keilor Park) station.
I have been seeking clarification from Mr. Carroll as to whether the fare will be a PT Zone 2 fare or if users will be required to purchase a more expensive Airport Rail ticket.
Mr. Carroll has advised that he is following this up with Jacinta Allen (Minister for the Suburban Rail Loop), and that he hopes to have the station accessible on a Zone 1 (PT) ticket.
Whilst I understand a final fare price can not be confirmed until closer to the station opening, the community should at least know if passengers will access the new station on a Public Transport Ticket, or a dearer Airport Rail Ticket.
I appreciate Mr. Carroll continuing to follow this up and I ensure the community that I will continue to seek an answer and keep you updated with any new information I receive.
