An update from N3R Coalition member Kay Shields
(who is not on social media)
"Met Josh and Jill (Ros Spence MPβs office). They gave a good deal of time to learn of concerns.
Ultrafine particles (UFP) in emissions get carried by wind up to 20 km away. Particles are so small easily enter body and associated with lung cancer and early cognitive decline. Josh asked how UFPs could be monitored-research on UFPs is in early stages. Increasing flights emitting UFPs over a population of > 5 million will cost the public health system into the future.
More CO2 emissions over Melburnians impacted by climate now. Josh was aware of urban heating and lack of tree canopy in parts of electorate, this plus emissions puts people at risk from heat stress esp. elderly/young
Noise. Info sought on Brisbane-about 84% of airport popn. impacted by noise from parallel runway/A.N.O reported community not adequately consulted, residents canβt sleep, work from home, enjoy outdoor amenities, children irritable due to increased noise. Noise impacts early childhood language development and performance at school.
Wildlife threats to local species Growling Grass frog/ Swift parrot/Wedge tailed eagle. Removal of Grey box forest and protected grasslands for Airport Commercial Business Park and third runway.
What are coalition seeking from rep?
- To push government to honour their promise to reduce greenhouse gasses for liveable climate.
- To oppose the expansion as it threatens Melburnians health.
- To open up dialogue about impacts of a third runway and not to be met with a wall of silence."
