Melchizedek, the Mysterious Priest-King (Genesis series #13) - Hearing and Obeying

Melchizedek appears only briefly in Genesis 14. He is called the “king of Salem” and “priest of God Most High.” He steps into the story without an introduction: no genealogy, no background, no mention […]

Hearing and Obeying

Psalms 110-114

Psalm 110

The Lord says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand (Check out Luke 20:42-43, Mark 12:36, & Hebrews 1:13.) until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. (Check out Matthew 22:44 & Acts 2:34-35.) The Lord will extend your mighty scepter from Zion.

You’ll rule in the midst of your enemies. Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy majesty, from the womb of the dawn you’ll receive the dew of your youth. The Lord has sworn & will not change his mind.

“You’re a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek” The Lord is at your right hand. He’ll judge the nations, heaping the dead, & crushing the rulers of the whole earth. He’ll drink from a brook the way. Therefore, he’ll lift up his head.

Psalm 111

Praise the Lord. I’ll extol the Lord with all my heart in the council of the upright & in the assembly. Great are the works of the Lord. They’re pondered by all who delight in them. Glorious & majestic are His deeds, & His righteousness endures forever.

He has caused His wonders to be remembered. The Lord is gracious & compassionate. He provides food for those who fear Him. He remembers His covenant forever. He has shown His people the power of His works, giving them the lands of other nations.

The works of His hands are faithful & just. All His precepts are trustworthy. They’re steadfast forever & ever, done in faithfulness & uprightness. He provided redemption for His people. He ordained His covenant forever – holy & awesome is His name.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. All who follow His precepts have good understanding. To Him belongs eternal praise.

Psalm 112

Praise the Lord. Blessed is the name who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in His commands. His children will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed. Wealth & riches are in His house, & His righteousness endures forever.

Even in darkness light dawns for the upright, for the gracious & compassionate & righteous man. Good will come to him who is generous & lends freely, who conducts his affairs with justice. Surely he’ll never be shaken.

A righteous man will be remembered forever. He’ll have no fear of bad news. His heart is secure, he’ll have no fear. In the end, he’ll look in triumph on his foes. He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor. (Check out II Corinthians 9:9.)

His righteousness endures forever. His horn will be lifted high in honor. The wicked man will see & be vexed. He’ll gnash his teeth & waste away. The longings of the wicked will come to nothing.

Psalm 113

Praise the Lord. Praise, O servants of the Lord. Praise the name of the Lord. Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now & forevermore. From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.

The Lord is exalted over all the nations, His glory above the Heavens. Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the Heavens & the Earth? He raises the poor from the dust & lifts the needy from the ash heap. He seats them with princes, with the princes of their people.

He settles the barren woman in her home as a happy mother of children. Praise the Lord.

Psalm 114

When Israel came out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue. Judah became God’s sanctuary, Israel His dominion. The sea looked & fled, O that you fled, O Jordan, that you turned back. You mountains that you skipped like rams, you hills, like lambs?

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water.

Melchizedek Was an Epiphany of Jesus: The Biblical Proof

Melchizedek Was an Epiphany of Jesus: The Biblical Proof

Exactly who was the mysterious Melchizedek? Some Christians say he was simply a man whose background was unknown. Others say Melchizedek was an epiphany of Jesus. Both sides refer to the biblical passages of the fifth and seventh chapters of Hebrews and Genesis, chapter fourteen. But there is a very important passage that is often left out...a passage that undoubtedly reveals that Jesus Christ Himself told us that He is the same King of Salem and Priest of the most high God that Melchizedek was. The mystery was solved in the New Testament of the Bible.

Having explained how Jesus is a #priest after the order of #Melchizedek from Psalm 104:4 (cf. Hebrews 7:1-22), the Hebrews author demonstrated how Jesus was the guarantee of a better #covenant.

Israel had many high priests because they each died; Jesus lives forever and thus holds the office permanently.

He always lives to intercede for His people.

God appointed Jesus as high #priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

#Melchizedek blessed Abram, and was thus superior to him.

Jesus' priesthood was superior to that of the Levites and Aaron.

Jesus offered Himself and would be able to perpetually mediate between God and man and intercede for people.

Jesus thus represents our ideal High Priest.

New Testament Reading: #Hebrews 5:5-10

The Hebrews author declared #Jesus to be a high #priest after the order of #Melchizedek.

Why did Jesus have to learn obedience through what He suffered? What does that mean for us in our lives?
