Ohio House Bill 172

This bill, which opponents call the "Child Abuser Protection Act", removes access to mental health care for children without the need for parental consent

Throwback Thursday – Meeting John Scalzi

A year ago today, award winning author John Scalzi came to Medina and did a Q&A at our local library. Afterwards, he was gracious enough to do a book signing. As I had recently purchased Starter Villain, which was his latest book at the time, so I now have a signed copy!

Preserving Digital Memories

If you know me at all, you know that I am a huge proponent of properly backing up our data. We all have stories of accidentally deleting or overwriting important files or photos or a hard drive failing, leading to the loss of years of important memories or information.

My wife, Rachel Gamin, is presenting Preserving Digital Memories tonight at 6:30 PM Eastern at the Medina County District Library. Rachel will talk about the steps you can take ensure that your data is protected from loss. Remember, you’ve gotta back it up to get it back.

From the library website:

Have you recently digitized your family photos, videos, or other memorabilia? Getting your most valuable memories on to a flash drive is a great first step, but it’s also important to get them into appropriate long-term storage! This class will show you what you can do with those digital files to share them with others and make sure that they stay safe and secure for years to come by using the 3-2-1- backup system.

You can register until an hour before the start of the event. There are still seats remaining, so come check it out!

I Met John Scalzi!!!

Author John Scalzi came to the Medina County District Library tonight to present his master class on sustainable super villainy and his best selling manual, Starter Villain.

Scalzi Written, Tyrion Approved

It was an entertaining and captivating hour hearing John answer questions and tell series about his writing, both what he’s written and the process itself.

I’m actually distracted by the backdrop for our selfie.

I’m looking forward to John’s next book coming out in 2025, When The Moon Hits Your Eye, as well as the seventh installment in the Old Man’s War series later next year.

Tyrion still thinks it’s a manual.

Defending Our Public Libraries

It’s been a week since the election and the country decided that, yes, we would like to put a failed fascist back in the White House. Based on what Republicans have been up to for years, a lot of civil liberties and rights are going to be in danger. We already have the lieutenant governor-elect of Indiana threatening to shut down a student newspaper for printing what Trump’s own allies have said about him and falsely proclaiming that “we aren’t a democracy”.

It’s not just newspapers. Groups like Moms for Liberty have been pushing book bans in the state of Florida, while book banning bills are proposed in 32 states. Throughout history, it’s never the “good guys” who are trying to ban (or burn) books. With my wife working at our local library, I’ve got extra reason to be concerned.

It’s time to do something.

A group called Libraries For The People offers guidance, documentation, and steps we can take in order to protect our libraries from the those who are attacking our public institutions and everything our country stands for.

One of the actions Libraries For The People recommends is attending at least three public meetings of our library’s board of trustees. I hope to do that to start with the upcoming meeting of the Medina County District Library board of trustees on Monday, November 18, at 6 PM.

Over the past few years, I’ve tried to set myself a goal of reading a certain number of books in a calendar year. Usually, that goal is 52 books so I average a book a week. Life hasn’t always let me do so, however. Last year, for example, I was only able to read 19 books. This is by no means a failure on my part, but I do think I need to change my goal focus. Instead of a set number of books in the year, I’d like to build the habit of reading every day, even if it’s just a few pages.

The books I plan to read will come from the following:

To track my reading progress, I have an account on Bookwyrm, a federated social media service for reading. I’ll also try to write reviews of the books I read, both here and on Bookwyrm. If you’re also tracking your reading, let me know where I can follow you so I can see what you’re reading.
