Medicane is a Portmantau of Mediterranian + Hurricane, Hurricane being a Tropical Cyclone in the Atlantic Basin with 1 min average winds greater than 63kts (74mph, 119km/h).
Though due to the rarity and the fact Mediterranian Tropical Cyclones don't tend to get as intense many storms get labelled 'Medicanes' even if they are bellow Hurricane intensity.
