17 Years After the Murder of Matías Catrileo: Héctor LLaitul Reflects on Mapuche Struggle and Legacy of the Weychafe

In an exclusive interview for Werken Noticias, conducted from inside the bio-bio prison of Concepción through his defense, Héctor Llaitul, spokesman and political prisoner of the Coordinadora Arauco-Malleco (CAM), reflected on the current state of the Mapuche struggle, his latest book, the legacy of Matías Catrileo and the necessary strategies to achieve justice and advance in the reconstruction of the Mapuche nation. This in the framework of the 17th anniversary of the murder of the young weichafe.

From the struggle for land to a great process of Mapuche national reconstruction

Llaitul positively evaluates the progress made since the death of Matías Catrileo, highlighting that the Mapuche movement has evolved towards a more comprehensive struggle, which constitutes the great legacy of the weichafe. “We went from the struggle for land to establishing the pillars to develop a great proposal for the national reconstruction of the Mapuche people, which implies fighting more strongly to recover the territory and the other identity aspects linked to political autonomy. This process is essential to guarantee the political, cultural and ideological rights of our people.”

From his perspective, the current struggle not only confronts the Chilean State, but also an entire system based on the neoliberal model, which he describes as “the most direct threat to the processes of territorial and cultural recovery promoted by the autonomist movement.”

The legacy of Matías Catrileo

For Llaitul, the figure of Matías Catrileo is central to the recent history of the Mapuche people. “Catrileo represents total dedication and the highest conviction in the struggle for the reconstruction of our people. His example continues to summon the new generations of weichafe,” he said.

He also stressed that the murder of Catrileo was an example of the systematic repression of the Chilean State in its most colonial and racist format, carried out under a government of the Concertación. “His death made evident the willingness of the Chilean State to politically repress and assassinate those who are decisively fighting for territorial recovery. This is part of the strategies that big business always imposes in defense of capital, using the governments of the day as tools to perpetuate oppression and domination.”

Strategies for Achieving Justice

According to Llaitul, “true justice for the death of Matías Catrileo will not come from the Chilean judicial system, which he accuses of being incapable of offering justice because its nature is colonial and it has always represented the oligarchy.” He adds: “Our way of honoring the fallen weichafe is to continue with the process of territorial recovery and with strategies aimed at the reconstruction of the Mapuche nation.”

“The State has always chosen to implement flawed compromises and negotiations that only seek to contain the struggle and resistance of our people, which leads us to the conviction that the struggle must be maintained from the communities, in the political and cultural fields and with the strength of the true weichafe.”

Facing criminalization and repression

The CAM has faced constant accusations and criminalization strategies. However, Llaitul affirms that these have not diverted the course of the struggle. “We face repression and persecution with dignity, without altering our political, ideological and cultural stance. The confrontation is direct and it is a reality that no one can deny, and resistance from the communities is fundamental in this process.”

Llaitul also pointed out that “the costs of this struggle, including political imprisonment and the militarization of the Wallmapu that affects the mobilized communities, are assumed with conviction, given that the Mapuche cause is absolutely necessary, not only for its justice, but also for the projection of a proposal for a better life for all.”

A call for resistance and solidarity

In his final message, Llaitul called on the Mapuche communities and society in general: “As CAM we continue to call on the communities in resistance, all our people and, of course, the new generations, to maintain the Mapuche cause, to fight with strength, with newen and with the conviction that we have seen in our martyrs. We are aware that the process has costs and consequences, and it is necessary to assume levels of sacrifice and loyalty to rebuild our nation.”

He also calls on oppressed Chilean society and the international movement for just causes to get involved in the recognition and respect of the rights of the Mapuche people, supporting actions of resistance and reconstruction in the face of a system that it considers oppressive.

The legacy of Matías Catrileo, according to Héctor Llaitul, “not only remains alive, but continues to be a guide for the Mapuche autonomist movement, on our path for the recovery of territory, autonomy and justice for a people that is known for never surrendering or abandoning its cultural and political forms.”

“Therefore, our best tribute on this emblematic date will be to continue on the path of the futa keche kuifi yem, maintaining the Mapuche national liberation process.”

17 Years After the Murder of Weichafe Matías Catrileo/ Testimony of the CAM

Temuco, La Araucanía Region, Chile ·

Another year without our peñi weichafe Matías Valentin Catrileo Quezada yem, a university student and member of our space, who was shot by the Carabineros de Chile that caused his death while he was part of the occupation of the ex-fundo Santa Margarita, it has been 17 years since your departure but as the kuifikecheyem say if 1 falls 10 get up, MARICHIWEU ✊🏿✊🏿🔥🔥

An affectionate greeting to the family, mother and sister.

CAM DELIVERS UNPUBLISHED TESTIMONIES ABOUT THE MURDER OF MAPUCHE WEYCHAFE MATÍAS CATRILEO

On January 3, 2008, in the early hours of the morning, a group of Weychafe once again entered the “Santa Margarita” property in another action resulting from a long struggle by the Mapuche families of the Wenteche territory to recover their lands stolen by the Chilean state and given to foreign settlers during the occupation of our Nation.

Among them was Matías Catrileo, a young Mapuche native of Santiago who, in the process of reuniting with his Mapuche self, returned to study in Temuco, learned about the national liberation struggle of his people, studied it, understood it and committed himself, leaving his studies in agronomy and joining the CAM, dedicating himself fully to the processes of territorial reconstruction.

A group of carabineros who at that time were providing protection to Jorge Luchsinger’s property fired bursts of sub-machine gun fire at the group and Matías was mortally wounded by a 9mm projectile and we know the story, the group of weychafe of the Cam did not leave his body and in the midst of the violent repression unleashed at that time safeguarded him and later handed him over under conditions of protection to prevent the state from manipulating with its dirty hands the body of one more martyr who left the struggle of our nation to achieve freedom.

We share with you the invitation of his family to commemorate and remember with them Matías, a being who beyond understanding the problem, took charge of something very important today in the midst of the superficiality that capitalism imposes on us, today more than ever the example of Matías is fundamental, to take charge of our reality with all the costs that this implies.

The history of the “Santa Margarita” estate: Place where Matías Catrileo Quezada was murdered 17 years ago

It was on January 3, 2008, during the Bachelet government, when a shot from an UZI submachine gun (weapon of war) fired by a second corporal of the Carabineros, identified as Walter Ramírez, took the life of Matías Catrileo (from behind) at the Santa Margarita Estate, in the commune of Vilcún in the Araucanía region, owned by businessman Jorge Luchsinger who was under police protection. Catrileo was there, defending and claiming the Mapuche lands.

# Luchsinger Latifundista Family and its History:

The history of the Luchsinger latifundistas in the Araucanía region dates back to 1883, the year in which the Swiss settler Adán Luchsinger Martí arrived in Chile, where the treasury granted him approximately 60 hectares, about 70 kilometers north of Temuco. In 1906 they moved to Vilcún, and acquired 60 hectares from the German immigrant, Emilio Quappe. From this, Luchsinger began to buy several plots of land, totaling the thousand hectares. When he died in 1936, the entire inheritance was divided among his children.

According to official records, the descendants of the Luchsinger Rüff have five properties: Santa Margarita, owned by Jorge Luchsinger Villiger; the Santa Rosa Lote 1 farm, owned by Rodolfo Luchsinger Schiferli; the Santa Rosa Lote 2 farm, owned by Enrique Luchsinger Schiferli; the Santa Rosa estate, owned by Eduardo Luchsinger Schiferli, and another Santa Rosa estate, also in the name of Enrique Luchsinger Schiferli. Hectares that are claimed by the Mapuche communities.

# Santa Margarita Vilcún Farm:

The Santa Margarita estate occupies approximately 275 hectares, which corresponds to two plots of land, composed of a series of lots and hijuela, which is presented as “property” of Jorge Luchsinger Villiger, who on December 5, 1968, bought it from his father Conrado Luchsinger Rüff (who awarded it to him by ‘liquidation’ in 1954)

This farm is located in a place where numerous Mapuche families have historically lived, who live and carry their worldview, tradition and roots in it. This is directly embodied in the Mapuche territorial dispossession, where through the reduction of lands, they are controlled by a family group of businessmen.

# The Mapuche communities:

The Santa Margarita farm has been claimed for ancestral rights, by the Mapuche communities surrounding that sector for dozens of years. Where in 1999 the first occupation of the property was made by the Ayjarewe Wenteche organization of Truf Truf, together with dozens of families, which aimed to be definitive, but after an eviction order, around 100 police arrived to evict them.

It was already in 2001 that various direct actions began to be carried out, the claim was directly against the properties, which resulted in the installation of a barracks of special forces (inside the property) that ‘guarded’ night and day, but today there is no doubt, it is that this supposed improvement of “coordination” is transformed into greater militarization and greater protection of the police in the face of a legitimate demand of the Mapuche people such as the return of indigenous lands, including through Conadi, where they have been waiting for more than 30 years for the purchase of these, while the government and the right wing try to continue strengthening the police, and a greater onslaught of the police forces in the regions of Araucanía and Biobío.

For the restitution and return of ancestral lands to the Mapuche people!

Mónica Caballero: May the Memory of the Weichafe Be Transformed into Fuel

Words by Mónica Caballero Sepúlveda, Anarchist Prisoner

Ideas are the fuel that gives the necessary energy to give content and execute the practices antagonistic to capitalist domination.

The union between idea and practice seems to be the only possibility for both to transcend and perpetuate themselves. It could hardly be otherwise.

What would become of our ideas if they were not carried out or at least tried? They would probably remain as a set of beautiful daydreams on paper, and our practices, if they were not strengthened with ideas, like logic, they would lack the theoretical support to sustain them.

In this sense, the constant coherence between ideas and practices has made the struggles against capitalism transcend. That transcendence is in the Wall Mapu.

There are many generations of weichafe who with blood, tears and many smiles have managed to make their struggles their best inheritance for those to come. Weichafes like Matías was.

I remember the day they killed Catrileo, I could never forget the audio of the lamuen who called the radio to say that they were fleeing with their brother’s body. I was struck by the voice of that Mapuche who was carrying with him the still warm corpse of Matías who had just been murdered.

I tried the moment I heard the story to empathize with that man and until that moment few things had seemed so terrible and at the same time so dignified.

Since that day I have been constantly looking to the south of the territory dominated by the Chilean state and the Argentine state and on many occasions I smile when I see that we have the same fuel.

There is no state that can stop the paths antagonistic to capitalism.

Matías Catrileo may your memory be transformed into action.
