It's always fantastic to visit Prof. Kazuo Kashiyama's CMLab at Chuo University in central Tokyo. I visited over 10 times by now, and every time, it's a delightful experience. Here, we enjoyed demos of an upgraded VR Cave system. Also on the program, German-Japanese Workshop on Computational Mechanics, and Kenjiro Terada's 60th Birthday Colloquium. And on the lighter side, Tokyo Marathon (second time as participant) and World Baseball Classic.

Even if “flying wheels” aren’t practical yet, exploring ideas like this is how innovation happens. Every impossible concept has a kernel worth developing. Who knows? The future of cycling might be more uplifting than we think. 😉

Don't we just love MS Outlook? Never mind that the message deceivingly invites you to switch to "new" Outlook, which apparently has fewer functions than the old one. I'm so happy to have to use this abomination only in order to remove attachments which Apple Mail is not able to remove.

Nature magazine wants to leave Xitter for BlueSky and is asking for input.

In the thread below this toot, there is an un-paywalled link to the Nature Poll. Where it asks what you like about BkueSky, you can say you like mastodon :-)
And you can submit multiple times, apparently.

Hi, scientists from the Fediverse! It seems that Nature is asking people about Twitter migration and if they are happier on #bluesky . On Nature writers' minds, Bluesky is the only place to migrate to. There's not a single mention of the Fediverse in there! However, there is a small free text box where you can write your thoughts, in the step before "send" button. So I did fill the poll anyway, writing why I decided not to go to Bluesky but to Mastodon instead. I thought that maybe if we get enough people to actually fill the survey and mention that they migrated to Mastodon, we can make a stronger case for open, free networks. It's an extremely short survey, so let's try! https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-00037-y #academicchatter #OpenScience

Like every year since 2015, I spend part of my last days in the office working on the CATS institute report for the alumni and friends. It's a chance to review the year, and pick the most amazing stuff. This is probably the most fun thing I do at work!

We now learned that our defense in August bore fruit and that the SFB Transregio 402 DediGrad is going to be funded starting in 2025 for the initial period of four years. The project is coordinated by the @tuchemnitz, and IKV, CATS, ANTS and WZL at RWTH Aachen are partners. The goal is to make plastics production processes more sustainable via a tailored use of reinforcement.

Last week, visiting the Chemical and Biological Engineering department at the Seoul National University. Pictured here with students from Jaewook Nam's lab. We are working together on modeling and simulation of battery slurries and their processing.

It was great to visit Austin again, for the 6th annual meeting of the International Research Training Group 2379 on Hybrid and Hierarchical Approaches in Modern Inverse Problems! The meeting took place at the Oden Institute at the University of Texas. The highlight of the non-scientific part was surely the canoe tour of the Lady Bird Lake, watching the bat extravaganza under the Congress Avenue bridge.
