Medium by The Mandrake Memorial, released on Poppy in 1968.

The Mandrake Memorial took a dark, sombre turn on their second LP.

Ended Tuesday and welcomed Wednesday after a swim with Leda by Linda Cohen, released on Poppy in 1972.

Linda Cohen was a mostly self taught musician from Philadelphia who along with being a fixture in the local avant-garde music scene, worked diligently as a classical guitar teacher for over 35 years. Her solo debut Leda is a perfectly minimal blend of gentle, fingerpicked acoustic guitar with baroque, blues, and classical stylings. Cohen is wonderfully accompanied on the record by warm modular synth and bass played by a number of guests from Philly’s underground music scene. The other instruments never overpower or distract from Linda’s playing and instead lightly color the scene with splashes of psychedelia, creating a sparse, yet comforting listening experience. Leda also includes gorgeous cover artwork by the late-great Milton Glaser RIP!

3 Part Inventions by The Mandrake Memorial, released in 2016 on Flashback but recorded in 1969.

The lost, third studio album from 1969 by this quite good psychedelic / proto-progressive band. An absolutely worthwhile release for fans of music of this era.

“Having made two superb psychedelic albums and gigged with The Doors, Frank Zappa, Pink Floyd, The Velvet Underground and many others, in June of 1969, The Mandrake Memorial came to London. The plan was to record with famed producer Shel Talmy (The Kinks, The Who, Pentangle), but when that fell through, they persevered alone.

Long thought to be lost, 3 Part Inventions anticipates the woozy, dream-like vibe of their 1970 masterpiece Puzzle, combining eerie vocals, trippy guitar and otherworldly electronics to create a unique whole.
