195 years ago, Allan Cunningham collected the type specimen for Acacia fimbriata from a Brisbane/Maiwar river bank. Thus it got its common name the Brisbane golden wattle. Here it is growing in a dry Eucalyptus woodland community on a nutrient-poor, sandy-soil ridge in the #SevenHillsBushlandReserve. The channeling habit which directs rainwater to its roots is obvious. And what a welcome sight is the spectacular inflorescence in the middle of winter!

The old, flower-bedecked pergola had run along the south bank of the #Maiwar for more than two hundred years. When #StarfleetMedical had redeveloped the old Children’s Health precinct at the eastern end, they’d toyed with the idea of extending the Grand Arbour further, adding a little greenery to the unshakable grey human-inflicted dreariness of #Meanjin’s metropolitan core. The boffins in the city cabinet had vetoed it. All good things, they said, must come to an end – in this case, a physical one.
