A lot of current criticisms surrounding MZOs is rooted in NIMBYism, IMO. That is not to discount that there are serious issues with specific MZOs. In the past, there was much better criticisms like trying to build an Amazon warehouse on a wetland. However, people aren't really raising environmental issues with MZOs anymore. People are instead focusing on the number. I think the NIMBYism has made it hard for the real environmental criticisms to be heard.
