Bryan HanselSea smoke on Lake Superior forms when extremely cold air blows over relatively warm water.
Due to the large volume of water in Lake Superior and 82,414 km2 / 31,812 mile2 of surface area (it would take two Denmarks to fill it), it remains warm for most of the winter. Sea Smoke conditions are common from December through February.
