This is from the "Local Lives" documentary series I directed and produced. This episode is not only timely because of MLK day, but also because it discusses protesting and why people stand up for their communities.

ICE MAN #1 and ICE MAN #2 (neck gaiters, tactical vests) sit at a cafe table with SS MAN (all black, swastika armband).
GUITARIST plays a simple E minor arpeggio; optional soft line in Italian or French.
WAITPERSON:
El enchiladas, amigos?
ICE MAN #1:
Muy delicioso—
ICE MAN #2 clamps a hand over #1’s mouth.
SS MAN:
Sehr gut. Enchiladas sehr gut.
They rise, lift neck gaiters, turn downstage. KITCHEN WORKER watches.
KITCHEN WORKER:
Adios, amigos. (waves — no reply)
They walk a few yards, mumbling German/English fragments. Offstage voice:
OFFSTAGE VOICE:
TURN AND BURN
ICE MEN grab KITCHEN WORKER; escort offstage.
KITCHEN WORKER:
Por qué, por qué! Why!
SS MAN grabs WAITPERSON; ICE MAN #1 hauls GUITARIST off stool.
GUITARIST manages one last E minor chord as they are pulled away.
ALL EXIT STAGE RIGHT
ENTERS STAGE LEFT
FIGURE in flowing robes and blindfold moves to center.
SPOTLIGHT ON SIGN:
they will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends
LIGHTS FADE TO BLACK

Musical Interlude: I first heard Joan Baez singing this, which was pretty damned white of me, I have to admit. I did a little digging and found other less-pale versions that were more impactful. I remember singing this to myself at my first gay rights march...wow...memories coming back!
Still, this is a stirring rendition, and this is a good day to share it.

"Girl in a Green Cap," Laura Wheeler Waring, 1930.
Waring (1887-1948) was THE great portraitist of the Harlem Renaissance, painting many of the notable Black people of the era.
Born in Hartford, CT, the daughter of a minister, her family was educated and cultured, and her ancestors had been part of the Underground Railroad. She attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, graduating in 1914. She traveled briefly in Europe, returning home when WWI started, but returned in the 20s, where she honed her style and exhibited in Paris galleries.
Returning to the US in 1927, she was commissioned to do portraits of figures of the Harlem Renaissance; this project, along with her work teaching at Cheyney University, an HBCU outside Philadelphia, was to consume the rest of her life. Her work is now featured in some of the country's top museums and galleries.
The subject of this portrait is unknown, but her calm confidence and self-assurance, and that knockout outfit, are beyond question.
