A Lyrid meteor from orbit

Last night at 1am, clear sky and the "peak" of the #Lyrids of which I saw exactly 1 in two hours. Did some star trails again hoping to capture meteors as well, but only got satellites.

May as well become a satellite spotter for all that I can change anything.

RaiNews: Stanotte vanno in scena le Liridi, stelle cadenti di primavera

Sono dovute alla scia di polveri lasciata dal passaggio della cometa C/1861 G1 Thatcher

Tonight, the Lyrids will be visible, springtime meteor showers.

They are due to the trail of dust left by the passage of comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher.

Outside for two hours after midnight, clear skies, as the #Lyrids approach the peak. Saw a single #meteor... and it wasn't a Lyrid.

Still, it was a chance to experiment with the new-ish star trails feature in the Dwarf3 app.

The Lyrids are one of the oldest recorded meteor showers, with reported sightings dating back over 2,500 years. And theyโ€™re making their annual display next week. @Independent tells us how to witness the spectacle:

Lyrid meteor shower: Dates for the April 2026 celestial spectacular

The Lyrid meteor shower is expected to bring fiery streaks to the night sky

Happy Space Science Saturday!
The Lyrids meteor shower peaks on the night of April 22โ€“23, bringing up to 18 meteors per hour! One of the oldest recorded meteor showers, the Lyrids come from debris left behind by Comet Thatcher. While the radiant is in the constellation Lyra, meteors can appear anywhere in the sky. So find a dark spot, give your eyes time to adjust, and look up.
For the best views in Toronto, head out after midnight when the sky is darker and the radiant is higher.

A G2 geomagnetic storm watch is in effect for 17 & 18 April.

Earth will be coming under the influence of the fast solar wind from this large coronal hole, which is now facing towards us.

Strong aurora may combine with meteors from the annual Lyrids meteor shower, which peaks on 22 April, making for some stunning photo opportunities!
