And finally on sustainable travel:

It doesn´t always work out. As I started out these posts with, I also did a lot of plane travel at the beginning of the year, and I did have to combine plane and train on one trip.

But: that is still better than having done all of this by plane. It´s not perfect, but I do try to set an example that long-distance train *is* a feasible option in many cases.

And still more on long distance train travel:

- If it´s going to take 2 days, I try to get as far as I can on day 1. That may mean you get in to wherever you spend the night late, but at least you have a relatively shorter day the next day. This works for me, maybe not everyone´s cup of tea (I´ve arrived at 1AM then walked to the hotel... usually not a problem in a big city, but not everyone will want to do that).

And more on long distance train travel:

- Plan long layovers and few train changes. Sounds obvious but a lot of the search engines will give you the fastest option, which may mean 8 trains rather than 2. The trip to Cluj had a 2 h 10 min layover in Munich, which meant 1) no stress when the first train was delayed, and 2) connection with a direct train from Munich to Budapest.

I made the decision to travel by train whenever possible, and what I´ve found works for me over the past few years of doing this (with train trips to Copenhagen, Stockholm, UK, Switzerland and Romania over the past 3 years):

- Train travel is *excellent* focus time for me. Seriously. No meetings, no phone, especially the long legs are so good for this.
