Did Narses invite the Lombards?

The Lombards, led by their king Alboin, invaded Byzantine Italy in 568, in a movement which was well-prepared in advance.

The move was not a response to an emergency or an attack by another group. It was a planned and organised migration towards new lands.

They even had a plan B in case of failure.

They handed over their houses and lands to another people, the Avars, with the agreement that if they returned, they would get them back.

The Lombard Invasion

The Lombard invasion of Byzantine Italy was a pivotal event in Venetian history.

The invasion, and the conquests that followed, led to an increased importance of the lagoon settlements, to a slow demise of Byzantine control in north-east Italy, to the establishment of a semi-independent church in the lagoons, and ultimately to Venetian statehood.

The Lombard invasion, and the subsequent migration of parts of the mainland residents into the lagoons, became a central part of the later Venetian national narrative — the stories they told to explain where they came from and who they were.

The invasion of Venetia — Paul the Deacon

About half of book II of the Historia Langobardorum by Paul the Deacon is an account of the initial Lombard invasion of the Roman province of Venetia et Histria, under the leadership of Alboin.

The salient parts are reproduced below, excluding the many asides, geographical descriptions of other parts of Italy and what happened after Alboin moved on from Venetia.

The “Historia Langobardorum” by Paul the Deacon

The Historia Langobardorum — The History of the Lombards — by Paul the Deacon is the oldest chronicle relevant to the history of Venice. It probably dates to the 780s or 790s.

As the name implies, it is a chronicle of the Lombards — or Langobards — but as the Lombard invasion was a pivotal event in the history of early Venice, there are several chapters relevant to Venice.

The Historia Langobardorum was also an important source for many of the later Venetian chronicles and writings. It is, and it always was, an essential source for the study of early Venice.
