Dear Fediverse,

my father-in-law needs a new printer/scanner/copy combo, that needs to be supported by Linux (now that I got him away from Windows).

I found the HP printers being supported by HPLIP:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/supported_devices/index

Any experiences with the OfficeJet Pro 9132e / Officejet Pro 9120 / OfficeJetPro 8132e?

As far as I found out all of them should support copying from the device (without a compuer needed). Ink will be expensive for all of them (regardless of the manufacturer).

All of the recent Epson and Brother printers that I found seem not to be supported, at least I did not find them on openprinting.org.

I think something like
$ for x in *; do lp "$x"; done
Should print every file in a directory.
Do double check that it works with just echo before doing it with lp.
Note: unless I'm mistaken, lp is the program for "print this" - I believe it to be part of CUPS though I maybe wrong.

Pro tip: If you have a Brother laser printer and it's not working on Linux over a network to print but scanning works, you may need to switch it from IPP over the IPP protocol to IPP over the DNSSD protocol.

Edit: I installed drivers from the Brother website. Can you believe it? Much better results. The printer was functional before, but much better quality now.

#cups help please.

My printer insists on printing at 300dpi, and I know it's capable of higher.

I don't see any UI choice to change this (PopOS, KDE Plasma). I do see 300 listed in the PPD files. If I change (say) the DefaultResolution line from 300 to 600 and restart cups, it appears to regenerate the file clobbering my changes.

How do I force this to print at a higher resolution?

Brother_MFC_J6945DW.ppd:*DefaultResolution: 300dpi
Brother_MFC_J6945DW.ppd:*cupsPrintQuality Normal/Normal: "<</HWResolution[300 300]>>setpagedevice"
Brother_MFC_J6945DW.ppd:*cupsPrintQuality High/High: "<</HWResolution[300 300]>>setpagedevice"

It's not as fancy as AI but you know what blows my mind? Turning on my wireless printer and getting a notification the unit was configured while I figure where the print manager is on my newly installed Linux Mint system.

#LinuxPrinting I have an Epson L3151 connected to an ubuntu box and a debian box can print from network. So for some months i am happy. But my big fear is that printers fail easily and are not fixable.. #ifixit should make repairability scores for printers.. #LinuxHardware
