Léon Augustin Lhermitte, The pay of the harvesters, 1882

Despite Lhermitte's education and career success in Paris, his heart remained in rural France, particularly with the agricultural labouring classes.

One of his nicknames was the 'painter of harvesters', and it was 'Paying the Harvesters', which was his great career breakthrough. The painting was esteemed both by the general public and by his artistic peers.
