Resistance Fighter Lepa Radić

The Yugoslav Partisan was executed 83 years ago today at the age of 17.

In February 1943, Lepa Radić was captured while organizing a rescue of 150 citizens seeking refuge from the Axis. She attempted to protect them by firing at the Nazi SS forces but was eventually arrested. After 3 days of isolation + torture, during which Radic refused to divulge any information, the Germans sentenced her to death by hanging. Moments before her execution Radic was offered a pardon if she revealed the names. Her response: “I am not a traitor of my people. Those whom you are asking about will reveal themselves when they have succeeded in wiping out all you evildoers, to the last man.”

Today in Labor History December 19, 1925: Lepa Svetozara Radić was born. She was a Serbian communist and antifascist, executed by the Nazis in 1943 at age 17 for shooting at Nazi troops. As they tied the noose around her neck, they offered her amnesty if she revealed the names of her comrades. She replied that she wasn’t a traitor and that they’d make themselves known when they avenged her death.

Heute vor 82 Jahren wurde Lepa Radić von den Faschisten umgebracht.

Angeblich rief sie, mit der Schlinge um den Hals: „Lang lebe die Kommunistische Partei und die Partisanen!“ Als die Besatzer ihr die Freiheit anboten, wenn sie Versteck und Namen ihrer Genossen nannte, soll Lepa Radić gesagt haben: „Ich verrate meine eigenen Leute nicht. Sie werden sich von selbst zu erkennen geben, wenn sie Euch Schergen bis auf den letzten Mann ausgerottet haben.“
