Another two months, another 50 hours, another learning te reo blog post!

I'm still amazed that I can watch tv or read the news in a different language, understand most of it, and learn from it. Combine that with vocab and grammar study and it's going well!

200 Hours Learning Te Reo

Update on my te reo learning progress for July and August 2025

I stumbled across 'pae kare' recently, and I've been having trouble with the kupu 'pae' for quite a while.

Was trying to figure out what it meant, and I knew 'kare' as a word to address a friend but still didn't get it. I then found this:

and realised that it was just a transliteration of the exclamation 'by golly' -> 'pae kare' 😂

Near the end of June, I reached the milestone of 150 hours learning te reo Māori. My current goals are to do consistent practice, build up comprehension in reading and listening, and steadily increase my vocabulary and grammatical knowledge.

150 Hours Learning Te Reo

Update on my te reo learning progress for May and June 2025

Skivling's Website

I've written a new blog post summarising my te reo learning progress in the past month, and shared my small goals for the next month.

> "The main problem I’ve had this month was consistency in doing listening and reading immersion. Even though I find them enjoyable, other things take up my free time and I didn’t spend as much time as I want to."

100 days ago, I made a commitment to learn te reo Māori. Now, I've published a blog post to explain my approach and progress so far.

Māori Made Easy is a great resource, but due to all the other things I've been putting time into to learn #TeReoMāori, my 20 minutes of MME end up completing two or three day's worth each time (I also read most out loud). For normies, it says it takes 30 minutes per day.
And this is a good thing - it speeds me through it so I get to more challenging things while still ensuring I practise these basics. I'm on W15 of the book after 7 weeks of study 😂

Audio in #Anki !!

I can save the audio files of words from kupu.maori.nz or Te Aka and add them to my Anki deck so each repetition it autoplays them and I can make sure I pronounce them correctly.

So I'm finally doing almost daily journalling, a habit I've wanted to do for ages - all because of my #TeReoMāori study! I can put together simple sentences in all tenses, so my writing practise is translating those short diary entries into Te Reo. I use Te Aka for new vocabulary and a couple sources to help with grammar I'm not sure about.
I then read several of them aloud, to practise pronounciation but also just getting used to the language.
