This won’t change until the law changes.
And that will follow #LarryLessig’s theory of change:
- #norms (what's socially acceptable)
- #law (what's legal)
- #architecture (what's technologically possible)
- #markets (what's profitable)
Energized from listening to this episode
@creativecommons with #DamienRiehl & #NoahRubin as a followup about #AllTheMusic. The good news about court cases (in the US) does bring up a useful perspective. And the #LarryLessig namedrop is as legit as can be.
Wonder if #MichaelGeist has inspired similar courtwork here in Canada. Our #Copyright regime is somewhat different, despite #USMCA/#NewNAFTA.

Damien Riehl & Noah Rubin of All The Music — Open Minds … from Creative Commons
In this episode of CC’s Open Minds, we sit down with programmer, musician, and copyright attorney Damien Riehl, and fellow musician and programmer, Noah Rubin, the creators of the All The Music project. Frustrated by accidental copyright infringement lawsuits stifling artists creativity, the dynamic duo teamed up to create an algorithm that would generate and save every possible melody, in order to claim the copyright, and then release it again to the public domain under CC0, which means they have “no rights reserved.” We dive into why they decided to take on this audacious project, how they did it, and how they are trying to help other musicians.
