🙀 I know I say alot of things are huge, but seriously, this is MASSIVE!🙀 Scientists have found a brand-new antibiotic, called lariocidin, and it's naturally made by bacteria. The thing that makes it so exciting is that it attacks bacteria in a completely different way than the antibiotics we use now. And this is a game changer because antibiotic resistance is a 🦠 HUGE🦠 problem, it takes the lives of over 1 million people globally (my close family members included) Our old drugs are basically losing their power, and so many scientists are desperately searching for need new ones. But it's been almost 30 YEARS since a totally new type of antibiotic hit the market! 🤯 So the thing that makes lariocidin different is its shape. It's like a lasso knot – super strong and stable. And this is what means it can attach to a crucial part of the bacteria (the ribosome, its protein-making factory) in a way that other antibiotics just can't.
