Interesting. To me, 'were' is already past tense, and 'are' is present tense. 'Wert' seems to be simply standing in for 'were', and 'art' is directly replacing 'are'.
Do we have any scholars of Middle English, or whatever period this came from? Or might these have just been 'prosodic choices' (chosen to fit the rhythm of the piece)?
Heard my noisy #hedgehog again outside. What a relief. I saw a dead one 50m from my place and I feared it was the one from my yard.
I've only just now realised that the English term makes so much sense! It really sounds like a tiny pig in the bushes.
(🇩🇪 word is "Igel" - pronounced like "e" plus the first part of "gallon" - and I have no idea who came up with it as it bears no resemblance to any other word that I'm aware of)
