Yesterday, I mentioned that the British Army was starting to retire its fleet of Land Rovers. This was one of the more exotic applications of the Landy - as a long-range desert patrol vehicle for the elite Special Air Service. This heavily modified Series IIA ‘Pink Panther’ version dates back to the late 1960s. Pink was found to be the best camouflage colour for desert conditions. Pic taken at the British Motor Museum, 2024.
The end of an era. The British Ministry of Defence announced yesterday that it would start phasing out its still-large fleet of Land Rovers, ending an association between these tough vehicles and the British Army that dates back over seventy years. Here is the first pre-production Series 1 Land Rover from 1948. On display at the British Motor Museum at Gaydon in 2023. (1/2)
