I use Waveshare powered hubs for powering SATA SSDs connected to Pi 4Bs.
I also have a Waveshare 2 bay dock (Toaster style) that has additional charging ports. I populated it with 2x 8TB enterprise (7200rpm) HDDs and power the Pi and cooling fans from the dock. It uses about 25W measured at the wall so it seems reasonably efficient. It's been solid for nearly two years, running Debian from an SD card and using ZFS for storage. (/var mounted to the ZFS pool.)
