Mum liked the photo I took https://old.mermaid.town/@futzle/113418353541751818 for the #LPlatePlayers single, and so she asked if she could use it on her Christmas cards this year. I said sure, helped her add text in Procreate, helped her print it. She put an explanatory note about the song in the accompanying note, and now one of her neighbours is wondering if I do gigs.

This is all moving very quickly!

Old Mermaid Town

As part of our #LPlatePlayers collective (https://music.futzle.com/lplateplayers/), our esteemed leader @futzle wanted to write a Christmas song for #RememberingGeordie since he was such a mad fiend for all things Christmas. It was very collaborative, she did the base song with vocals and details of the key and chord changes, and then the rest of us piled in for the various parts and she pieced it all together and mixed it. I offered to do both bass guitar and drums, and am so impressed at how well the song turned out!

I'm definitely getting a _feel_ for the drums at this point, for the song it was pretty much free reign other than wanting to ensure there was an open/close hi-hat at the last beat of the bar, and of my original take there were only a couple of minor improvements that @futzle suggested (well, that and a bit of quantisation needed), plus some back and forth figuring out how the intro should go. For the bass guitar, my timing was quite good and there was only _very_ minor quantisation needed. For both instruments, I ended up recording it in sections rather than attempting to go through the whole song in one go, and that made it FAR more manageable.

I'm also going to get the original stems for the song and see if I can turn it into "I'M STAYING HOME THIS CHRISTMAS (DEEP TECHNO MIX)". 😈 (Or at least, some sort of electronic version anyway; we'll see how good my Logic Pro skills are. 😛) I did something similar a couple of years ago and it was great fun: https://virtualwolf.org/media/posts/2232/thread

The artwork looks better flipped; the typography is neater with the ascenders/descenders not fighting so much. #LPlatePlayers

Next step is for me to finish mixing and mastering, which means I have to pull out the proper monitor speakers from the back of the closet ~yay~

This has been an amazing effort from you all. My thanks to you all, including some folks who weren't able to record a part but were really helpful during the production.

Update 2024-10-15: Progressive mixdown now with vocal parts from @herzleid. What a fantastic vocal ensemble we have now, on top of all the fantastic instrumental performances!

Can be heard by contributors on the Dropbox link.

Drawing the line now on submissions, except for a couple of vocals that we've prearranged extensions on. My job now is to fill in anything that is still missing, TBH not much, because wow, so many quality stems from you all. Great job!

Update 2024-10-12: Progressive mixdown on Dropbox site now contains vocals and oboe from @raaahbin, and sampled bells and pads from @philsawa; thanks! Also replaced my harmonica in the instrumental with something less intrusive (sorry sknob, I know you loved it, you were the only one)!

I reckon we're close to done. A couple more folks have offered vocal parts, and I'll gladly mix those in as I receive them. I have an idea to tie in the elements of the instrumental, and unless there's a piccolo trumpeter in our midst, I'll have to resort to synthesis.

There are 3 layers: bass, chord, and lead.
