By all accounts, LBJ was a walking contradiction; I've heard that he could be a monumental asshole sometimes, but then he also did a hell of a lot for civil rights and equality with his Great Society plan. I was reminded of this after walking through his library, and came across this pillar on the second floor.
It reads:
"The Great Society asks not how much, but how good; not only how to create wealth, but how to use it; not only how fast we are going, but where we are headed. It proposes as the first test for a nation: the quality of its people."
This is as true now as it was in his day and is applicable to just about every facet of American society these days. My, how far we have fallen from these ideals. He would be so disappointed to see what we've become.
