The Trump administration has said they will no longer issue SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits to Americans starting Nov. 1 due to the continued government shutdown. The shutdown is about Republicans in congress not negotiating over letting ObamaCare or Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies expire, which will result in out-of-pocket insurance premiums rising significantly for about 20 million Americans in January 2026. While Republicans claim Democrats want to fund healthcare for undocumented people, the Democrats have proposed restoring health care for “lawfully present” immigrants. Undocumented immigrants continue to be prohibited by law from receiving federally funded coverage. And through all this, our most vulnerable community members, those who use SNAP benefits to feed their families, will be punished. That CANNOT and SHOULD NOT happen on our watch. AND IT DOESN'T HAVE TO! Governor Gianforte has access to a state taxpayer funded account that can be used to fund SNAP benefits for Montanans during the shutdown. When the government reopens, provided they do not revoke those funds, the state of Montana would be reimbursed. As of right now, there is no plan to do so, which is why we will mount a public pressure campaign! We are calling on Gov Gianforte to SAVE MT SNAP! Please join us in protest this Saturday, Nov 1 from 3-5 pm on the sidewalk in front of the Mountain Villa Apts at the corner of Hwy 93 and W Reserve. Signs will be provided for you to spell out "Gianforte can save MT SNAP!" Our goal is to raise awareness, get media attention, and pressure the Governor to fund SNAP. We will also be gathering signatures for a statewide petition which we will submit to the governor's office. Parking is available at the Home Depot and Cabela's parking lots across the street at Hutton Ranch. This a local Indivisible event! Here is where you'll describe your local event. Please be specific about important details and include anything a first time attendee, or new group member, might find helpful! *A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.*
