Explaining the PeV Neutrino Fluxes at KM3NeT and IceCube with Quasi-Extremal Primordial Black Holes

The KM3NeT experiment has recently observed a neutrino with an energy around 100 PeV, and IceCube has detected five neutrinos with energies above 1 PeV. While there are no known astrophysical sources, exploding primordial black holes could have produced these high-energy neutrinos. For Schwarzschild black holes this interpretation results in tensions between the burst rates inferred from the KM3NeT and IceCube observations, and with indirect constraints from the extragalactic gamma ray background. In this letter we show that if there is a population of primordial black holes charged under a new dark $u(1)$ symmetry which spend most of their time in a quasi-extremal state, the neutrino emission at 1 PeV may be more suppressed than at 100 PeV. The burst rates implied by the KM3NeT and IceCube observations and the indirect constraints can then all be consistent at $1Οƒ$. Furthermore, these black holes could constitute all of the observed dark matter in the universe.

From under the sea, #KM3NeT wishes you happy holidays!

Wow! 🀩 Look at this very nice brand-new representation of our #neutrino detector. It shows real #KM3NeT #data from the Mediterranean #deepsea in a huge physical event display in the #hallway of the #Nikhef institute in Amsterdam, The Netherlands
The ladder gives an impression of the height of display.

Yes! we have installed a second 'node' for connection of detection units in the #ORCA seafloor network! A complex operation executed by ship crews, ROV operators and dedicated #KM3NeT teams on board and in the control station on the shore.

Congratulations and many thanks to all of them!

Last week in Brussels our funding authorities signed an agreement establishing the #KM3NeT AISBL

Serious stuff!

The #AISBL provides us with a formal and internationally recognised legal entity as a non-profit organisation building, operating and exploiting the KM3NeT observatory.

A new #KM3NeT paper! About how, in real time, we filter our raw data.

The design of the filter, its purity or how well background is removed, the computing capacity needed, its efficiency in terms of effective detector volume.

It is all explained in https://www.km3net.org/the-online-data-filter-for-the-km3net-neutrino-telescopes/

Ever wondered how KM3NeT’s #OpticalModules are built? It’s an elaborate, multi-step process to create these pressure-resistant spheres packed with 31 photomultipliers, power & data electronics, and calibration tools like compasses and nanobeacons.

Last week, KM3NeT collaborators gathered at the newly inaugurated #CAPACITY lab in #Caserta for the 2nd Optical Modules Integration Workshop.
