Low battery notification for connected devices in upcoming KDE Plasma 6.8

As KDE Plasma 6.7 is becoming closer to the final release, there were more bug fixes that landed this week to the desktop environment. Those bug fixes are necessary so that the final release of KDE Plasma 6.7 is stable enough to be usable in public.

However, KDE Plasma 6.8 development started, with new features landing to this version as development goes on over time.

Normally, when you’re playing games or when you’re using other full-screen applications on your PC with connected devices, if their battery becomes low, the desktop environment wouldn’t show you a notification on top of the application saying that you’ll need to charge those devices. This can lead to your connected devices powering off without your knowledge, especially if such device doesn’t give you a clear indicator.

Starting from KDE Plasma 6.8, you’ll be able to get notifications that indicate that your connected devices report low battery, even though you’re in either a game or a full-screen application. This behavior is similar when your laptop’s internal battery becomes low, so that you have advanced reminder that you’ll need to charge those devices.

More specifically, when you have Do Not Disturb turned on, all notifications, except the low laptop battery notification, are muted. Starting from KDE Plasma 6.8, you’ll be able to get low battery notifications for your connected devices, even though Do Not Disturb is turned on. This prevents your gaming sessions and other full-screen sessions from being interrupted, thus improving user experience.

The final version of KDE Plasma 6.8 will probably have this improvement. This version of KDE Plasma will incorporate many features and improvements as development goes on, while KDE Plasma 6.7 gets ready for the final release expected at the end of this month.
