Cyndi Lauper, She’s So Unusual, 1983 on Portrait

Lauper’s debut solo album, She’s So Unusual had four top-five singles: “Girls Just Want To Have Fun,” “Time After Time,” “She Bop,” and “All Through The Night.”

A number of the songs were covers – “Money Changes Everything” by The Brains, “When You Were Mine” by Prince, “All Through The Night” by Jules Shear, and even “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” which was written by Robert Hazard who had performed it with multiple bands and made a demo recording.

Truly a must-have album for an 80s music fan.

My copy—via a record fair at Mill No. 5 in Lowell MA—is a 1984 pressing with the original inner liner and Portrait label.

This will be a short one, but it needs to shared. It was on this day 40 years ago that the fourth single from Cyndi Lauper’s debut album, She’s So Unusual’ made the top five of the Billboard Top 10…

Today I was listening to "The Eternal Return" by Jules Shear (1985)

@bborn #AlternateFridayMusic June 7 2024 the word is "Lesson"

Artist: Jules Shear (feat. Patty Griffin)
Album: Between Us (1998)
Song: Windows And Walls

In the hour of the dead you walk the floor
Where the battle will be fought
You may not learn the lesson but the lesson will be taught

I gotta be honest here, I don't know a lot about Jules Shear. He had an album called "The Eternal Return", with "Steady" and a Bangles song. He dated Aimee Mann (the 'Til Tuesday song "J For Jules" was about him). And he had this album of collaborations, "Between Us", which I listened to once, and taped a few songs off of. I know even less about Patty Griffin.

But that line in the chorus has stuck with me for years.
