Portraits by Eugene Zak (1884-1926
Eugeniusz Zak was born to an assimilated Jewish family in what is now Belarus. Zak’s father died in 1892 + his mother moved to Warsaw with her 8 year old son. At 16 he moved to Paris + there participated in the creation of the group Rytm, formed by artists of the Polish avant-garde. His career ended suddenly when he died of a heart attack at 41.
Galerie Zak was run by the artist's widow, Jadwiga. It had a reputation as one of the most interesting galleries on the left bank, sponsering shows of Polish + Jewish artists including Kandinsky's 1st Parisian one-man show. Galerie Zak was looted + liquidated by French collaborators + Jadwiga + her son were murdered in Auschwitz by the Nazis. Many of the looted artworks are still missing.

You're invited to join the The Spinoza Havurah for an Arts Farbregen (led by myself) this Saturday at 10 am Eastern/3 pm UK.
(Registration link below)
The focus of our discussion for the farbregen will be some works of visual art, with each work of art being using as a spark for conversation, but we will also close our time for our humanistic Kaddish, as well as kiddush and Ha'motzi.
We will also have an optional arts activity that participants are welcome to engage in during our discussion time. If you want to participate, all you will need is some paper and your favorite drawing tools (pencils, colored pencils, ink pen, markers, etc.)
Welcome! You are invited to join a meeting: Spinoza Havurah - Art Farbrengen. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the meeting.
🎨✡️ Learning Hebrew through art? Yes, please!
When you create something with your own hands—like coloring Hebrew words and Jewish traditions—it sticks in your mind and heart in the most powerful way.
That’s why I teach Hebrew not just with lessons, but through art in my Hebrew Words & Jewish Traditions Coloring Book. It’s not just learning… it’s experiencing the language.
🖍 Every page is a chance to slow down, connect, and bring Hebrew to life—your way.
