From Marx to mosque: how Iran reshaped global extremism

The Iranian Revolution of 1979 reshaped the political landscape of the Middle East, replacing Iran’s Western-backed leader with an Islamic Republic. It

An interesting piece on Iran by the Guardian's #JasonBurke, drawing parallels between the end of the Shah regime in 1979 and today's situation.

It makes me think about societal tectonic shifts and how we experience them in our lifetime, if we hang around for long enough.

I was a teenager in 1979, well read, politically very active. When Ayatolla Khomeini returned to Iran, I wrote a lengthy piece for our student newspaper, explaining how the European Left must celebrate the coalition of forces that manifested itself in the Iranian revolution. The actual result of course was a regime of internal repression and external threat. Five decades later, history is breaking up again.

Shortly after, I spent three months in Israel, in a Kibbutz. There had been no Intifada yet. So many opportunities were open then that have since closed.

History moves slowly, but fast enough to overtake us in a single lifetime.

Nobody knows what would follow regime change in Iran – but what happened in 1979 offers some pointers

The radical clerics benefited then – but who would prevail this time, asks the Guardian’s international security correspondent Jason Burke

@Loukas @oysteib #JasonBurke is the actual Africa editor at the Guardian and is someone I have read for years with interest. He takes a more nuanced line in relation to interpreting the coup in #Gabon (and other coups) https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/aug/30/why-gabons-coup-plotters-can-count-on-popular-support

Niger. The ultimatum from the West African bloc to the leaders of the miltary coup has now passed, but Jason Burke is always worth reading, and offers some intriguing shreds of something a bit like optimism (Candide variety, maybe) in his imaginary journey across the Sahel. #Niger #Nigeria #Sahel #ECOWAS #JasonBurke #AfricanPolitics https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/aug/06/nigers-coup-adds-to-chaos-in-the-sahel-but-it-may-also-offer-some-hope

The military takeover in one of west Africa’s more stable states has huge implications for democracy on the continent – and the response of its neighbours is crucial
