Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it for Pokémon card shopping?
Multi-city trip? Yes. The Tokyo-Osaka-Nagoya-Hiroshima triangle on the Shinkansen adds up fast without it.
Single city? Skip it and use local transit.
Pair the JR Pass with hostels (extremely safe in Japan) to keep travel costs low so you can spend more on cards.
Keep daily non-card costs low while Pokémon shopping across Japan.
Hostels are extremely safe. The JR Pass covers bullet trains between Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Hiroshima. Every dollar saved on transit is a dollar spent on Pokémon.
I saved hundreds on accommodation by choosing hostels over hotels, redirecting that budget into cards.
Ok, that's very cool.
So I have the JR Rail pass, and did some seat reservations online. When you pick up the seat ticket, you not only can do it at the reservation machine, but you can also pick and choose which reservations to pick up.
So, if you did safety reservations ahead of time, you could wait to print those tickets until the day of.
Why is that important? The system is smart and won't let you reserve seats during a time you already have reservations for. So once you print out the seat, you gotta go to the counter to get them changed.
Also, for some trains you *need* to use the seat reservation to enter the station, so better not lose them!
