A memory of last year's Island of Light festival in Smögen, where the audience really lived the festival lyfe.

Emma-Kara Nilsson's background in theatre was clearly visible in her installation Island to Island at Island of Light Festival in Smögen (an island), Sweden. The use of light was enjoyably narrative and composition in space so very beautiful! And Moon played its supporting role very well.

Trip to Smögen made possible by the Finnish-Swedish Culture Foundation, thank you very much!

Usually, video mappings try to master the surface they're projected on, but Philip Frank's Lithogenesis played with the forms of the cliffs of the islet, without a wow-moment what so ever. I could have watched it for hours, and would have, if there hadn't been other artworks to see. Seen at the wonderful Island of Light in Smögen, Sweden, 2025.

Another favourite of mine in the Island of Light festival in Smögen, Sweden: Alexandra Stratimirovic's Shapes. Made of trash found in the sea (as many artworks of the festival are), the piece is quite simple, yet very majestic.

Dear people: if you have a change, go / travel to Smögen, Sweden to see the Island of Light light art festival! Open until September 14th. It was such a joy! The idea of the festival is to create light art with nature, not just put an art piece in it. And what a nature Smögen has! Beautiful, steep cliffs everywhere, with surprise ravines and streams along them. An excellent site for light art. The only minus side of the festival is, that as a curator, I just cannot steal anything from there, since the artworks are so one with their environment.

Of course my camera isn't up to this task, so I only have few close to decent photos. First ones are from Yggdrasil, a piece by Slovenian artist Matej Bizovicar (faintly visible in the second photo). As many of the artworks, it's mainly built of trash found in the sea. It's impressive up close, but also worth seeing from the opposite shore, with the reflection forming roots to this tree.
