Previous studies have solved the high-resolution structures of the dimeric band 3 transporter, but the ion transport mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated. This study solves several cryo-EM structures of band 3 in different conformations indicating that the ion transport mechanism involves the concerted movement of chloride and bicarbonate ions.
