The husband and I were in the mood for another gay sports romance, so we rented the 2022 film “In From the Side”, starring Alexander Lincoln and Alexander King. (The first name is a bit funny where I live, because there was a locally famous Lincoln Alexander with a highway named after him.)
In the trailer we see it’s about two rugby players in the UK who fall in love. We immediately assume it will be yet another film about closeted men hiding their secret relationship from a homophobic sports community, and eventually prevailing through the power of love. We were entirely wrong.
In this film the romantic leads play on a gay rugby team. And they are both cheating on their partners. This was a very different film than we were expecting.
I really enjoyed the film, and not just because the casting director had exactly the same taste in men that I do. There’s no easy answers; all the characters are flawed; and the film’s core themes turn out to be broader than the central story.
(Maybe this summer I’ll pay more attention to my local gay rugby team, who practices not far from where I live.)
