Sure, there’s a newly-elected madman loose in the Northern Hemisphere ranting about being “saved by god to make America great again”, but here in the South, we know an election is nigh when one of our homegrown nutbags appears to derail it.

As many tried to avoid Trump's inauguration by tuning in to the Australian Open this week, billionaire and chief election scammer Clive Palmer resurfaced to begin his tri-annual assault on the senses, this time with tales of woe and concern for Aussie battlers.

And in the process, Palmer's efforts may well help elect the Trumpist Peter Dutton as Australia's next prime minister.

Emulating the confected empathy and political strategy of fellow billionaires in the U.S., Palmer’s advertising blitz – commenced even before a confirmed Federal election date – was all about children going to bed hungry, the cost of living breaking families and offering “prayers” for our fellow poor Australians.

All very admirable, one might think, were it not for a couple of small details.

The first is that there would be decidedly fewer children going hungry if Palmer and his billionaire buddies – both here and elsewhere – reined in their greed just long enough to pay their employees equitably — or at all, in Palmer's case. The billionaire famously refused to pay retrenched workers their entitlements when his nickel refinery went broke back in 2016, after bankrolling his political party to the tune of $20 million.

The ATO is charging interest on HECS that has already been repaid! 😨
When interest rates were 1% it was barely noticeable. But now, it's hundreds of dollars that students are being scammed.

HECS indexation increasing unaffordable student debt

“In 2020 and previous years, indexation was sitting around 1.8%- 2% and then a jump to 3.9% in 2022 and in 2023 a whopping 7.1%…

“Your HECS debt is indexed on 1 June every year before the end of the financial year. Really, it should be indexed after the start of the new financial year on 1 July.

“The problem with the indexation system is that the ATO hasn’t calculated the repayments your employer has made throughout the year, hence they are applying indexation to your debt amount from the start of the financial year.

“This means that a larger dollar amount will be indexed causing you to end up with more debt added on.

“The ATO should be including the payments you have already made to reduce the debt for that financial year.”

HECS indexation increasing unaffordable student debt

The recent indexation of HECS fees at 7.1% is adding to students' debt at a time of a cost of living crisis for young people, writes Rowan Bosman.

Ban 'rapper-type music' — actually, ban everything

A recent statement from NSW Police declaring a ban on 'rapper-type music' at the Sydney Royal Easter Show has Tom Tanuki asking why we don't just ban everything.

The #IndependentAustralia.net publication is so independent it goes through US #LiteSpeed servers. Lol

Truthfully we had them on a higher pedestal than most #publications, but lost respect for them when we saw they allowed themselves to be #MITMd.

"History demonstrates that expanded legislative and police powers are used against everyone — and particularly against the radical Left or progressives. Most expanded laws to deal with protests are aimed squarely at us anyway.

The NSN have plenty of other gestures they can use and symbols they can deploy. Banning some bad symbols will only lend more power to new ones. "
Why more laws, bans and cops won't stop neo-Nazis

Whenever neo-Nazi exploits occur in Australia, politicians and the media cry out for more laws, bans and cops, but their calls are largely misguided.
