  • WTF not all juristictions even allow demanding an ID for something. In fact unless one's one of the few listed types of businesses or a government institution, it's illegal to request, process or store IDs in Germany due to the ease at which they can be abused for impersonation and scams.
    • In fact a lot of scammers are the prime reason why even @bsi disrecommends handing over any ID or allowing anyone to scan those that don't have a "legitimate interest".

So unless it's a car rental, hotel, bank, money transfer service or centralized shitcoin exchange where insurance/fraud protection, AML & CTF applies, even requesting an ID is a no-no!

Seriously, #discord's "#AgeVerification" is so trivial to bypass that this would not hold up as "robust age verification" in any juristiction.

  • You cannot verify age without ID'ing someone to an extent.
  • Unlike verification in meatspace, there is no good way to do so remotely/online!
  • Anything similar is basically "#KYC with extra steps"!

The problem with leaving a chat system that has now a blanket age verification thing on it, is that any other chat platform that gets sufficiently large will also be required to do so, since it's in the laws that these chat companies interact with.
