November GrauEveryone's big on filters on the fediverse and that's delightful but I've been trying for years to successfully filter out all those people chirpily announcing the return of Summer time (i.e. countdown to the Season of Pain for anyone with inverse SAD) and I've just never managed. Without actually filtering out words like "day" and "time" it just seems impossible, but it's what Im going to have to do.
When I see those "ONLY FOUR MONTHS TO SUMMER!" posts I feel like Harrington in MR James' Casting the Runes getting passed that slip of paper telling him three days are allowed. Except this goes on waaaay longer than three days. And it seems to me like the shouty sunshine posters are louder than they've ever been.
Obviously people can shout all they want in their own space. But I've got a lot of problems right now and I'm really dreading the return of the spring light this year. I just wish all there was an #ISAD related hashtag and that these people would use it so their posts could be filtered. Because although they don't mean any harm, the combined result of their cheerleading efforts is to make it feel like you're not allowed to have winter. You're not allowed to have darkness, because something something photosynthesis something something Midsummers Eve.
My life has been ruined several times over because of mental health events and it always happens in the Spring or early Summer. And I know I'm not that unusual. Dorothy Parker wrote a really famous poem about spring misery. There are tonnes of night-owls and quite a few people who don't cope well with summer light. If the Fediverse is going to pride itself on catering to minorities I would really like it to cater to the 10% of SAD sufferers who get the inverse version.
