Houston Mayor John Whitmire was joined by U.S. Navy Rear Adm. John Hewitt in downtown on Tuesday as the city plans to welcome more than 1,000 sailors this fall as part of the city’s first Fleet Week.

Fleet Week Houston: Mayor Whitmire, Navy officials discuss plans for November event

From Nov. 5-12, active-duty military ships — accompanied by U.S. Navy sailors, U.S. Marines and members of the U.S. Coast Guard — will be docked near La Porte for a celebration that will include ship tours, military demonstrations, air shows and educational programs.

More than 1,000 sailors and Marines will dock in Houston this November as the city will be a first-time host of Fleet Week to celebrate the 250th birthday of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps.

Houston to host Fleet Week for the first time this November

Fleet Week, a celebration of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps, will bring active-duty military ships to the Port of Houston. Residents also will be able to tour ships and witness military demonstrations, air shows, educational programs and other public events.
