Holy shit, I managed to install the #Hispeedido #HDMI thingmabob for the #Nintendo64 and IT'S BLOODY WORKING! :-) It was a bit of a nightmare soldering it to what I believe is the GPU and I wasn't sure what to expect. Where the graphics of the NES and SNES would probably be crystal sharp since it's mostly 2D, the Nintendo 64 was the early days of 3D on the console, and textures and effects are honestly not that sharp.

While the HDMI board probably offers a little more sharpness, it offers much richer colors and no color bleeding. It also offers convenience - no need for a TV that has a #SCART port or an #upscaler device. I do have several of the latter ones though, and worth noting is that the #OSSC device probably won't help you, since it doesn't like the N64's composite video signal.

Sound is included in the #HDMI signal, and so far it's pretty awesome! :-) What should I play first?

Game Boy Color Screen Upgrade – Hispeedido Mod from AliExpress | Fix It Friday

... An hour and a small pile of plastic clippings and filings later, I managed to fit the screen in the original top part of the case.

They weren't lying! The screen is a bit bigger on the front, but required a lot more room on the back. You have to remove everything but a 2mm edge underneath the bezel of the screen, to which it adheres with some heavy duty double sided tape.

From what I hear, the screen is actually surplus from the old #Blackberry handheld devices. For this to work in the GBC, they need a controller board, which is fixed with dreaded #kapton tape. There is plenty of room for this though, and it seems like an electrically safe sandwich of hackish goodness.

Fully assembled, I turned the unit on and everything just works! Here it is, with a brightness of 2 out of 4. I turned it down to 1 afterwards, and that's fine too.

Not sure how much I'll be using it, but installing the mod was a lot of fun and very satisfying.

Recently I was gifted a Game Boy Color, and holding this particular handheld console in my hands for the very first time, my initial thought was how could anybody see anything on this? Admittedly, I'm an old man who values brightness, but damn, this thing must have been nearly unusable unless you were in direct sunlight.

For those confused, the LED screen on it was reflecting the ambient light, meaning it had no backlight of it's own. My generous friend told me he'd be in the back of the family car playing it, and he's hold it up to the light outside to be able to see anything on it.

Thinking this cannot stand, I immediately ordered the #Hispeedido OLED upgrade from China. Fitting this brand new screen in the old case is supposedly difficult, so I ordered a replacement top shell. It wasn't part of this shipment, so I thought I'd try to fit it anyway.
