It's #HevyDevyTime!
Today I'll be listening to selections from the incredible 30+ album discography of the inimitable Devin Townshend and talking about why I love this Great Canadian Goofball and his work. Follow or mute as you desire!
I'm going to be focusing mostly on his solo work, with albums released under his name and as the Devin Townsend Project, which means I will be skipping over Strapping Young Lad, the extreme metal band he fronted as a young man, but we should talk about them briefly.
STL is phenomenal and totally worth your time especially if you are at all metal-curious. The songs are all written by Townsend and the records display a lot of the aesthetics that he would refine in the years to come -- the production especially but also his approach to songwriting, harsh vs clean vocals, and his sense of humour. But they are dark, brutal, and traffic in the extreme metal tropes of late 90s and early 2000s. Mostly not my cup of tea.
But they're an incredible band live, especially Gene Hoglan on drums. If you want a taste, here is Strapping exhibit A:
