📢 Our new open-access paper is out in Urban Climate on using three plan evaluation approaches to better understand how Arizona cities are advancing heat resilience. We find that the plans have high-quality participation and coordination but lack detail on vulnerability and climate change uncertainty. We also found opportunities to better target heat mitigation policies to the highest heat risk areas, diversify heat-related policies, and improve plan integration efforts.

This study is the culmination of several years of plan evaluation work through the SW-IFL with @SaraMeerow, Malini Roy, Shaylynn Trego, Saeideh Sobhaninia, and many University of Arizona and Arizona State University students.

Humanity will likely experience new record-breaking extreme heat across the world this year due to the combination of cliamte change and the strong El Niño forming. This is our heatshed moment to act!

📢 This is our “heatshed” moment. Check out my new commentary with @SaraMeerow in the Journal of Urban Affairs' special issue on Extreme Heat in Cities. We argue that we are in a critical moment in history where heat mitigation, management, and governance should be an urgent priority to ensure thriving communities in the face of an overheating world.

New story out on our 3rd Southern Arizona Heat Summit: "There's not any other city in the United States that's doing a continual heat summit like this with the range of partners that we have, so I think that's something to be really proud of. That said, of course, we still have a lot more work to do which is why we're all here." https://news.arizona.edu/news/southern-arizona-heat-summit-highlights-youth-voices-while-helping-tucson-prepare-extreme-heat #extremeheat #heatresilience #heathealth #climatechange

How U of A students braved the summer sun to help communities become heat resilient

More than 150 students across all three state universities have been involved in a Department of Energy program to help communities understand and respond to extreme heat. Their work, researchers said, was crucial to gathering data that will inform researchers' advice to city planners.
