Emu Wines began in the 1840s when Patrick Auld established vineyards at Magill, later moving to Morphett Vale where he added a distillery. Emu became famous for its ports and sherries, exporting globally. Hardys later acquired the brand, continuing its legacy. The Adelaide–Willunga railway was built in 1912 and opened in 1915. Morphett Vale station, near Wheatsheaf Road and the old Emu Winery, handled wine casks and was staffed until 1957. Passenger services ended that year, and goods trains ceased by the late 1960s. The line closed in 1969, was dismantled in 1972, and today forms part of the Coast to Vines Rail Trail.
